The seed

Ch. 45 introduces Don Krieg in stages:

The silhouette-introduces-the-major-antagonist device is being used in its first-instance form. Krieg’s flagship is also flagged as damaged (page 19, Gin’s report: “I didn’t know the flagship was in such a condition…”) — the off-page wrecker is left structurally unexplained.

Why this matters

The silhouette-introduces-the-major-antagonist device recurs across the series for every major antagonist:

  • Crocodile (Alabasta tease)
  • Big Mom (mentioned-long-before-shown)
  • Kaido (mentioned-long-before-shown)
  • Blackbeard (named Ch. 234 long before active threat)

Ch. 45’s Krieg-tease is the first instance and serves as Oda’s prototype for the device. The damaged-flagship seed is also Oda’s first off-panel-event-that-implies-a-bigger-antagonist device — the wrecker (Mihawk) will be introduced via the Krieg-flagship-damage backstory, not via direct entry. This is a two-step antagonist introduction: Krieg-via-silhouette, Mihawk-via-Krieg’s-damage.
