Doflamingo Will Deploy The Birdcage To Seal Dressrosa
Status: confirmed · Technique: chekhov-explicit
The seed
Cornered as the Dressrosa situation collapses (Law freed, the Revolutionary Army present, the Colosseum prize lost), Doflamingo names his endgame for the first time: “I’ll have to use the Birdcage!!” A Chekhov-explicit named device whose function is withheld — a planted weapon that pays off forward. See Birdcage .
In the Luffy↔Doflamingo finale, Doflamingo spells out the Birdcage ’s lethal mechanics as a taunt: a 1-hour limit until it closes entirely, the dead mounting within 30 minutes , the land “as red as a flattened tomato ” by the 50-minute mark . Quantifies the doomsday clock the deployment set in motion.
Ch. 787 pp. 10, 16 — the deployed Birdcage turns to genocide
The Birdcage is now actively closing and slicing the city; Doflamingo accelerates it to force Luffy out, with a “three minutes to genocide” countdown (p. 16). The seal-the-island threat is fully realized.
Ch. 788 pp. 2, 5, 12–17 — the lethal climax: an “immovable” cage held back by the whole country
The Birdcage reaches its arc-wide lethal climax: an “immovable” shrinking blade the entire country — citizens, gladiators, dwarves and Marines — must physically hold back to survive (pp. 2, 5, 12–17).
The payoff
Ch. 745 — CONFIRMED (payoff in-window)
Doflamingo’s decision (ch. 744) to deploy the Birdcage is executed on-page: the blade-string cage seals all of Dressrosa and the sea around it (pp. 12–14), cutting the island off from the outside world so no information escapes. The planted chekhov device becomes the arc’s structural threat exactly as set up. See Birdcage .

Why this matters
A villain, cornered, names a single endgame device out loud while its effect is concealed — the textbook chekhov-explicit setup that the device becomes the arc’s structural threat. Cross-link Birdcage , Doflamingo , Dressrosa .
