Bell-mère’s pre-Cocoyasi fighting sailor identity is canonized across two consecutive chapters — first by Genzo’s narrator-witness flashback (Ch. 77), then by Bell-mère’s own self-identification mid-combat (Ch. 78). The two beats together close the loop.
Why this matters
Pre-loads the Marine-veterans-as-village-defenders register that later arcs will repeat (cf. various background characters in later island arcs). Explains why she was the only Coco Village adult to physically resist Arlong’s takeover — she has actual combat training. The chapter installs ex-Marine-tangerine-farmer-single-mother as a possible character archetype.
The Ch. 78 I was a fighting sailor self-identification operationally confirms what Ch. 77’s Genzo-narration already established — Bell-mère’s pre-Cocoyasi identity is active-service Marine veteran. The two beats together compose a two-source biography reveal (third-party narrator + first-person self-confirmation).
Open questions (downstream)
The specific affiliation, war, unit, and engagement remain unspecified. Genzo’s Ch. 79 mercenary accusation (“But you’re a mercenary!”) raises ambiguity about whether her service was Marine-formal or freelance-mercenary. The MACE-tattoo on Bell-mère’s chest (Ch. 78 page 5) may be a Marine-unit signifier.
