Why this family matters (plot weight)

Ch. 625 establishes that “the first Vander Decken” was “lured down to the seafloor” by the legend that a once-a-generation mermaid princess can control the Neptunians (Sea Kings) (p. 14), and that the legend’s truth is “a secret that belongs to my family alone” (p. 15). The Decken line’s hereditary obsession is therefore with the being who commands the Sea Kings — the future Ancient Weapon Poseidon (Ancient Weapons). Vander Decken IX’s decade-long pursuit of Shirahoshi is the latest expression of this ancestral fixation. The legendary first Decken is recorded INSIDE this lineage note — there is no separate character note for the ancestor .

Ch. 626 reaffirms the multi-generation line: Vander Decken IX invokes “the dream of all the Vander Deckens who came before me” (p. 3) as he schemes to reach the age-altering Tamate Box hidden inside Ryugu Castle via the Shirahoshi marriage plot.
