Etymology
- Surface meaning: 以津真天 — an ateji spelling whose reading “Itsumade” puns on 何時迄 itsu made = “until when?” (the name IS the creature’s cry).
- Real-world reference: A bird-yokai from the Taiheiki (c.1334), formally named and drawn by Toriyama Sekien in Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki (1779). During a court epidemic a mysterious bird perched on the palace roof crying “itsu made, itsu made” — lamenting the corpses left unburied / “how long must this suffering last?” — until the archer Oki Jirōzaemon Hiroari shot it down. Described as a human-faced, curved-beaked, saw-toothed bird with a serpent body, sword-sharp talons, and a ~4.8 m wingspan. Mars’s giant winged beast lifts it directly.
