Summary

At Alubarna, Zoro and Mr. 1 continue their duel. Mr. 1 declares that since gaining his Dice-Dice power (Supa Supa no Mi) no swordsman has ever scratched him, and no swordsman can defeat him. Zoro counters that Mr. 1 has never met someone like me before. The two trade blows — Zoro’s Oni Giri and Tora Gari land on Mr. 1’s body but draw no blood (his body is a human blade, every part a cutting edge), while Mr. 1’s Razor Claws and a spinning multi-blade attack named Daisy Blades carve the surrounding Alubarna buildings apart and bleed Zoro badly. Cornered and bleeding, Zoro demands of himself: “So what am I lacking?!” — triggering a flashback to his childhood at the dojo, where his sensei Koushirou taught him that the greatest swordsmen can cut through anything (even steel) and can also choose to cut nothing; that a blade that injures all that it touches isn’t really a sword; and that the pinnacle of swordsmanship is the power to protect what one wishes to protect, and cut what one wishes to cut. Young Zoro vows to become a swordsman who can cut anything. Back in the present, Mr. 1 taunts that Zoro will never live to see him cut steel; Zoro resolves: when he learns to cut steel, “I’ll dice everything in sight!!” The chapter is a Zoro-solo duel chapter — Sanji, Usopp/Chopper, Vivi, and Luffy do not appear.
