- Name meaning
- VIZ on-page caption 'Kojia'; wiki canonical 'Cozia'; JP コジア (Kojia). Named after — and architecturally modeled on — Cozia Monastery, one of Romania's oldest monastic landmarks. The monastery's own name is Cuman/Turkic: 'koz' = 'walnut' (the site was first called 'Nucetul', Romanian for 'walnut grove'). One of Oda's real-world-landmark East Blue place-names; no plot-encoding pun on-page.
Profile
A kingdom in the East Blue, the target of a Germa 66 mercenary war in Sanji’s childhood flashback. Germa climbs the Red Line “to fight a few wars in the East Blue” (“Now beginning travel… in the direction of the East Blue!!”, p.9), then assaults Kojia (“Our targets in Kojia have noticed us!!”, p.10; “Bring down Kojia!!!”, “We’ve made landfall!!!”, p.11). The young Sanji escapes Germa during the chaos. Minor locale; spelling per the VIZ caption “Kojia.”
Etymology
- Surface / names: VIZ on-page caption “Kojia”; the One Piece Wiki files it under “Cozia” (the Live-Action series uses “Cozia Island”). Original JP コジア (Kojia). A minor East Blue kingdom.
- Real-world reference: the kingdom is named after — and architecturally modeled on — Cozia Monastery, one of Romania’s oldest and most celebrated monastic landmarks (founded 1387 by voivode Mircea the Elder, on the right bank of the Olt River in Vâlcea County). This fits Oda’s habit of naming East-Blue locales after real-world landmarks. The wiki hedges (“seems to be its namesake”), hence medium confidence — no Oda SBS confirmation.
- Deeper surface meaning: the monastery’s own name is of Cuman / Turkic origin — koz = “walnut” — borrowed from nearby Cozia Mountain; the site was first called “Nucetul,” Romanian for “walnut grove.” So the literal root of the name is “walnut (grove).”
- Pun layer: none documented. The plot-significant event here is Sanji’s disownment/escape, but that is encoded in the Vinsmoke given-name number motif (San = 3), not in “Kojia” itself; no sourced wordplay on the kingdom’s name.
- Sources: One Piece Wiki — Cozia (Trivia: namesake = Cozia Monastery, via the MediaWiki API; jname コジア / rname Kojia); Wikipedia — Cozia Monastery (Cuman name origin, koz = walnut).
