Why this matters
Per Theory A of Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern, a recruit’s signature-feat predicts their later crew role. Zoro’s role is split into two halves:
- Offensive (the duel-to-victory finale combat) — Mihawk, Kaku, King. Established Ch. 6 (deflect the Marine sabre-line), Ch. 17 (Onigiri), Ch. 33 (Tora Gari).
- Defensive (the line-defender / gatekeeper role) — established Ch. 35 (this seed); no verified second instance yet (see Correction above).
The Orange Town chapters established the offensive half; Ch. 35 establishes the defensive half. Candidate forward-recurrences that were checked and do not hold up:
- Thriller Bark (Ch. 485-486): “nothing happened” is a sacrifice/pain-absorption beat, not a corridor-gatekeeper beat — tracked separately at Zoro’s Hidden Sacrifice And The Nothing-Happened Silence. Not a valid instance of this pattern.
- Wano (Ch. 999-1058): no “Bao Huang corridor block” exists on-page; the real corridor-hold beats guarding Momonosuke (Ch. 1008, Ch. 1012) belong to Ashura Doji and Izo. Zoro’s Wano arc-role is the offensive King duel, already counted above. Not a valid instance of this pattern.
- Whole Cake: the “King Baum” (Kingbaum) escape sequence has no Zoro presence — he had already split toward Wano (Ch. 843). Not a valid instance of this pattern.
The gatekeeper role-template is first instantiated in Ch. 35. The chapter is the originating instance of Zoro-as-defensive-line, but as of this correction it is a single confirmed instance — the “recurs at every later arc finale” claim is retracted until a genuine on-page second instance is found and cited.
