Why this matters
Asura is the first on-page articulation of Zoro’s “demon aura” / Kishin imagery as a power born of fighting will rather than a Devil Fruit or literal anatomy — an enemy (Kaku) on-page names it an illusion “created through sheer will.” When a feat is explicitly framed as a product of will/spirit (not a fruit, not a trick), suspect Oda is pre-loading a will-tier power system (here, a Haki/observation precursor).
Name etymology (technique names debuted Ch. 417)
- Asura (阿修羅 / 阿修羅, Ashura) — Japanese for asura, a class of war-demons / power-hungry demigods from Hindu & Buddhist mythology. In Buddhist cosmology the asura realm is the third of the six realms of saṃsāra, reincarnation into which is driven by jealousy, struggle, and combat — a fitting register for Zoro’s fighting-will manifestation. Asuras are iconographically depicted as three-faced, six-armed — exactly the figure Oda draws behind Zoro and the words Kaku uses on-page (“a demon-god with three heads and six arms”). The name is the meaning: a literal Buddhist war-demon. The three heads/six arms wielding nine swords square the “Nine-Sword Style” math (3 heads × 3 swords = 9). Confidence: high.
- Asura: Ichibugin (弌霧銀, Ichibugin, lit. “One-Mist-Silver” → VIZ “Asura … Silver Mist”) — a homophone pun on ichibugin 一分銀, a real Edo-period Japanese silver coin (a “silver quarter-ryō”). Oda swaps the homophone kanji so the coin’s ichibu-gin reads literally as “one-mist-silver,” describing the finisher’s effect — it disperses Kaku’s slash-wave into a fine silver mist. Number/coin-name → effect-name wordplay; fits the Edo-money naming Oda uses elsewhere. Confidence: high.
