“And every time, I thought… In all my years as a pirate, I’ve been in a lot of tough spots where there was nothing to eat. If only there was a restaurant smack in the middle of the ocean. That’s right… if I get off this rock alive… I’m gonna build it if it’s the last thing I ever do.”
The Baratie’s etiology is a survival-vow on a starvation rock — not a converted prize, not a retirement luxury. The restaurant is the institutional embodiment of “food in the middle of the ocean” — the lesson Zeff learned by nearly starving.
Forward-payoff: every panel of the Baratie’s existence is now decode-able as realized form of the rock-island vow. Sanji’s labor at the Baratie is participation-in-the-vow, not generic-apprenticeship.
