York Is The Hidden Traitor Among Vegapunks Satellites
Status: confirmed · Technique: name-etymology, negative-space, dialogue-from-dead-character
The seed
Ch. 1062 — the name encodes the betrayal (earliest seed)
York is introduced as PUNK-06, “the Greed” — the satellite embodying Dr. Vegapunk’s trait of greed/desire (欲 yoku) . Among six satellites each named for a virtue or vice, the one labelled Greed is the one who later sells out her own creator to become a Celestial Dragon. The trait-name is a name-etymology seed : Oda telegraphs the traitor’s identity AND motive in her very designation, two arcs before the 1078 reveal. (The same kanji 欲 builds 強欲 gōyoku “greed” and 色欲 shikiyoku “lust”; her name “York” also keeps the satellites’ celestial-body scheme — the Cape York meteorite.)
Ch. 1077 — the unseen assailant + the traitor-among-satellites prime
Shaka is shot by an unseen assailant inside Vegapunk ’s most secure basement lab, and the “green blood gives benefits AND risks” framing primes a traitor-among-the-satellites read — the shooter is deliberately kept off-panel (negative space).
The payoff
Confronted over the carnage (“Was this all YOUR doing?!”), York openly declares her betrayal, that “one Dr. Vegapunk only needs the world ,” that she went to Marijoa years ago , and that she means to become a Celestial Dragon (pp. 13-15). The “negative-space” unseen shooter resolves to a known cast member; the surviving satellites’ grim “if [Shaka] weren’t dead already…” joke (p. 15) confirms his death. (The full extent of York’s plan / her becoming a Celestial Dragon is forward — this note covers the traitor-identity payoff only.)
Earliest known caller
(Unfilled.)
Why this matters
A clean negative-space payoff: Oda withholds the shooter’s identity at the 1077 cliffhanger and resolves it one chapter later to the one satellite framed as the odd one out (the gluttonous “Greed,” repeatedly shown asleep/absent during the chaos). Pairs a dialogue-from-dead-character beat — Shaka’s death confirmed retroactively through the survivors’ gallows humor. Cross-link York , Seraphim , Celestial Dragons .
