The seed
Kaido one-shots Luffy in Bakura Town. A near-full-page panel: the horned, wild-maned dragon-human colossus shot from below, body torqued mid-swing, his studded kanabo arcing across the lower-left of the frame. Lightning crackles in the upper background beneath a large “GANGK!!” SFX, and the technique caption “THUNDER BAGUA!!!” is lettered into the lower-right corner. This is the canonical staging of Kaido’s signature move.
The payoff
Yamato’s debut attack, felling Ulti to save Luffy. The dominant lower-2/3 panel restages the splash beat-for-beat: a horned, wild-haired figure (oni-mask horns, striped/banded arms) caught torqued mid-swing, a giant kanabo arcing across the lower register of the frame. Lightning crackles in the upper background beneath the identical “GANGK!!” SFX, and the caption “THUNDER BAGUA!!” sits in the lower-right corner — the same slot. Two pages later (pp. 16–17) the figure announces “I’m Kaido’s son!! My name is Yamato!!”
The mirror (the shared invariants)
- Horned, wild-maned figure mid-kanabo-swing, body torqued — Kaido’s dragon-horns + mane ↔ Yamato’s oni-mask-horns + flowing hair; both bodies fill the panel in a single torqued swing pose.
- The spiked/giant kanabo arcing across the lower register of the frame — the weapon sweeps low-left-to-right in both panels, the foreground mass of the composition.
- Lightning crackling in the upper background under the identical “GANGK!!” SFX — the exact same entrance-thunder lettering keys both panels.
- Move-name caption in the lower-right corner slot — “THUNDER BAGUA!!!” (923) ↔ “THUNDER BAGUA!!” (983), lettered into the same negative-space corner.
- Parent → child, same move, inverted target — Kaido swings it to one-shot Luffy (923); Yamato swings it to save Luffy by felling a Beasts officer (983). The shared staging marks the newcomer as Kaido’s blood and Kaido-tier before the dialogue confirms either.
Why this matters
When Oda introduces a new fighter by restaging an established top-tier villain’s signature-move splash — same silhouette, same weapon-arc, same SFX, same corner caption — the composition is doing the chapter’s exposition early: it ranks the newcomer at the original’s power tier and flags a blood/lineage tie. Here the visual quotation lands a full page before Yamato says “I’m Kaido’s son,” and before any Devil-Fruit transformation or power tier is shown on-page.
