Why this matters
In Ch. 131 (pp. 13-16) Wapol uses the Baku Baku no Mi to eat the Going Merry — rigging, anchor-rope, hull. This is the first time an enemy Devil Fruit threatens the ship as a target in its own right, and the crew’s furious defense (“He’s eating up our ship!!!”) is an early instance of the the ship is a crewmate doctrine. Pre-loads the long-arc emotional weight of the Going Merry’s eventual fate and the principle that the Straw Hats’ ship is something they will fight and grieve for.
