The narration pointedly withholds the disappearance — “two people present,” “even Big Mom doesn’t know the full truth” — while showing child Linlin already wielding Devil-Fruit powers (“the trick that Mother did”). Classic negative-space seeding of a withheld horror: only a Warrior of Elbaf (who fled and never returned) and the cook Streusen saw what became of Carmel and the Sheep’s House orphans.
