The chapter installs the Marines’ institutional self-framing as defenders of free society. The strongholds of liberty / no weakness permitted / self-selection-out is permitted rhetoric pre-loads the Marines’ ideological-rigor / moral-monopoly register.

Structural irony

The strongholds of liberty presupposes a peaceful world — but the same chapter’s newspaper (Sanji, page 3) reads ‘THERE WAS ANOTHER COUP D’ÉTAT IN VIRA. THE WORLD SURE IS IN TURMOIL.’ The Marines’ ideology is articulated while the world is destabilizing.

Forward-pattern

  • The strongholds of liberty register pre-loads:
    • Marineford-era Akainu-tier moral-rigorism.
    • Forward-canonical Government’s secret-rulership exposure (Ch. 1085+).
    • Lulusia destruction by Imu (Ch. 1060) — the Government literally destroys a sovereign kingdom while the Marines articulate strongholds of liberty.
