Fan-consensus once the Spade Pirates were named (post-Ch. 551, 2009); the Ch. 520 color-spread reinforcement was widely re-circulated after Ace’s death.
Why this matters
A two-layer name-and-image seed for a major-character death:
The name is the omen. “Spade” + “Ace” = the ace of spades, the culturally-loaded death card. Oda routinely encodes fate in card/number motifs (cf. the Rouge et Noir / “Ace = highest card” layer on Rouge and Roger). The crew name is not decorative — it is a death-flag.
Image echoes name. The Ch. 520 color spread re-plants the same ace-of-spades + death-card motif in a panel whose composition (Luffy’s face) literally pre-stages the death scene. Watch for color-spreads that re-state a name-seed in image form.
