Name etymology
- Kabuto (カブト) — named for the rhinoceros beetle (kabutomushi, カブトムシ): the slingshot’s metallic prongs echo the beetle’s horn. The same word, written 兜, is the samurai helmet (so called because its crest mimics the beetle’s horn), so “Kabuto” doubles as warrior-armor imagery dressing Usopp’s self-coronated “King of Snipers” persona. (Wiki: named after the beetle for the horn resemblance.)
- Firebird Star — Japanese Hi no Tori Boshi (火の鳥星), literally “fire-bird star”: hi (火, fire) + tori (鳥, bird) is the standard Japanese word for Phoenix, and the star ammunition is fired in a giant phoenix shape. Plausibly a nod to Osamu Tezuka’s Hi no Tori (Phoenix) — Tezuka’s life-work about the immortal bird embodying death-and-rebirth cycles — thematically apt for the chapter where Robin chooses to live and the crew burns the WG flag to be reborn as the world’s enemies.
