The seed

First on-page Marine self-epithet utterance in the series. Compare to pirate epithet-grammar: every prior named pirate self-introduces with their epithet (Iron-Mace Alvida, Buggy the Clown, Saw-Tooth Arlong). Smoker is the first Marine to use the same grammar — a structural inversion that codes him as a pirate-hunter who mirrors pirate-grammar.

Why this matters

Name-etymology tell — Smoker + White points to a smoke-based devil-fruit reveal. The Ch. 98 caption-card ‘WHITE CHASE’ SMOKER (named-before-acted) is here promoted to self-uttered epithet. The smoke-emission-as-Logia-pre-load (Ch. 98 page 14) and the white color-coding now combine: Smoker’s eventual Moku Moku no Mi form is white smoke.

Forward-pattern: the Shiroi-X (White-X) Marine-naming pattern is the prototype for the later color-coded Admiral pattern (Akainu = Red Dog, Aokiji = Blue Pheasant, Kizaru = Yellow Monkey, Fujitora = Purple Tiger, Ryokugyū = Green Bull).
