The seed
A xebec is a Mediterranean three-masted sailing ship (lateen sails + auxiliary oars) that originated in the Barbary States (Algeria, 16th-19th c.) and became the preferred ship of the Barbary Corsairs — the historical pirate confederation of the southern Mediterranean. Xebecs were cheap to produce, fast, maneuverable, and could carry more cannons than galleys. Nearly every corsair raïs (captain) had at least one xebec in his fleet.
Naming a pirate-captain after a pirate-ship type is structurally unusual — the man is named after the vessel his men sail, not the reverse. The name encodes a captain-as-ship-class equivalence: Rocks is a xebec — a fast, dangerous, cheap-to-produce vessel-of-piracy whose proliferation defines an era.
