The seed

Ch. 45 page 20 (SBS Volume 6, first installment): Oda answers a reader question about Django’s striped goatee by canonizing Django’s hypnosis-power as mushroom-induced, not Devil-Fruit-induced. “A striped mushroom started sprouting from his chin… he ate the cap of the mushroom, but it tasted terrible! He swallowed it nonetheless, and ever since then he’s been able to hypnotize people.”

Why this matters

The first on-page Oda-direct (out-of-fiction) statement that non-Devil-Fruit supernatural-power sources exist in the One Piece universe. The mushroom-power-source mechanic is canonized here. The principle generalizes: Devil Fruits are one power-source, not the power-source.

Future power-sources that this Ch. 45 SBS retroactively licenses:

  • Haki (Ch. 256+ in Shanks’s hands, formally introduced post-Sabaody)
  • Lunarian biology (Ch. 1033 King reveal)
  • Ancient-weapon-conferred powers (Pluton/Uranus/Poseidon access)
  • Vegapunk’s tech-replicated powers (Ch. 1062+ Seraphim)
  • Other exotic substances (SMILE fruits, fishman-karate, six-powers Rokushiki training, etc.)

The Ch. 45 SBS is the earliest on-page tease of the power-source-pluralism principle that the series will eventually canonize across hundreds of chapters. The principle: the One Piece universe has multiple supernatural-power origin-systems, not just one.
