Ch. 71 page 9 — Arlong (head-tilted-back gleeful laugh): “BWA HA HA HA! She made a fool of you! That one even forgave the death of a parent for money. She’s our cold-blooded witch woman!!”
Why this matters
The chapter’s most load-bearing dialogue. Arlong on-page canonizes the Bell-mère death as a fact about Nami’s past, and on-page canonizes the buyback contract as a blood-money arrangement. The reveal is villain-narrated — Arlong tells the world what he did to Nami’s mother, framing the payment-acceptance as Nami’s moral failure.
The line works on three retroactive-reframe layers:
- Ch. 10 You pirates took someone dear to me — the someone is here named obliquely as a parent whose death Nami forgave; the line is now keyed to Bell-mère specifically.
- Ch. 50 BELLE-MÈRE!!! I can’t wait to be free — the un-free state is here keyed to a buyback contract — a contract Nami can only escape by paying off the murderer.
- Ch. 70 step-sister + witch reveals — the step-family is here keyed to a traumatic family loss; the witch reputation is keyed to the blood-money acceptance villagers (and the villain) interpret as moral failure.
Forward-payoff: the Arlong-arc flashback (Ch. 77-78) delivers the on-page Bell-mère death-by-Arlong sequence. Forward-payoff: the Ch. 80-90 sequence where Arlong destroys the buyback (via Nezumi’s theft) reveals the blood-money framing was always Arlong’s own lie about his own arrangement — he never intended to honor the contract. The Ch. 71 line is the chapter’s single most retroactively-reframed dialogue.
