The chapter installs the chart-drawing-as-Nami’s-life-preserving-skill — her cartography ability is what kept her alive at age ~10, and what continues to keep her alive inside Arlong’s crew. Arlong’s utility-calculation register (kill humans who fail to pay tribute; preserve humans whose skills serve the crew) maps cleanly onto Nami’s survival.
Forward-resonance: Nami’s Grand-Line-cartographer arc-goal (her stated career-dream throughout the series) is the extension of the survival-strategy that began here.
