The seed
First on-page canonization Ch. 92 page 18 — Oda’s hand-drawn isometric cutaway of the Going Merry’s lower-deck Lounge / Conference Room / Galley / Bridge (Going Merry Ship Tour #1: Lounge). The diagram labels: Lounge, Conference Room, Galley and Bridge, Galley (brick-walled), Lamp, Refrigerator, Rack for wine and beer, Provisions, Whipstaff (for steering), Rudder. The chapter’s load-bearing detail: “This ship isn’t steered with a wheel. The whipstaff that’s attached to the tiller turns the rudder and steers the ship right or left.” Whipstaff steering is pre-1700s naval-architecture — predating ship’s-wheels. The Going Merry is therefore a period-archaic-construction ship — Kaya’s gift to the Straw Hats is an old-school galleon design, not a modern caravel. This is a worldbuilding-detail Oda chooses to emphasize at the cover-paratext level — the Merry’s archaic-design will become emotionally load-bearing at the Ch. 430+ Merry-was-a-good-ship arc when the ship’s age and limitations matter.
