The seed

Ch. 22 — pages 17, 24-26

Gaimon, dismissing the One Piece (p. 17): “The search for the One Piece is a fool’s dream!” — the same character then turns out to have spent 20 years guarding five empty treasure chests (p. 26 — “They’re empty… aren’t they?”).

The structural composition is the seed: the character who dismisses the protagonist’s quest is composed to himself be the cautionary version of the same quest. The 20-year vigil over empty containers is the visual answer to the question Gaimon is verbally raising about the One Piece. The chapter does not say “and the One Piece will also be empty” — but it stages the structural template that the pursued treasure is never the actual reward. Luffy’s response (p. 17, “Fine… we’ll find it! I’m very lucky!” and p. 27, “Don’t feel bad, Mr. Shrub Head! … Another 30 years and your whole life would have passed you by!”) re-frames the moral on-page: the journey, not the loot, is the value.

Why it matters

This is the first on-page seed in the series that the One Piece may not be what the reader expects. The seed is delivered indirectly — Oda does not have anyone say “the One Piece might be empty” but instead stages the parable structurally and lets Luffy not update in response. Luffy’s refusal-to-update is also the seed: the protagonist’s worldview will not be changed by encountering the empty-treasure parable. He will continue. Whatever the One Piece turns out to be, the chapter has already set up the Luffy-doesn’t-care-about-the-payload frame that governs the eventual reveal.

Synthesizer: if the series-end reveal of the One Piece literally is a pile of treasure, downgrade this seed to “sympathetic-character one-off”. If the reveal is anything other than a pile of literal gold, this Ch. 22 staging is the earliest on-page seed of that reframe.
