Profile
Marooned pirate, self-titled “Keeper of the Island,” who has spent the last 20 years on an uncharted East Blue island after falling into a wooden treasure chest he could not extract himself from. His body has grown to the shape of the chest, fusing him into it from the neck-down. His hair (an enormous afro) and beard have grown to compensating proportions in those two decades.
Backstory (Ch. 22 pp. 18-20, narrated by Gaimon)
- Was a pirate in a 200-man crew, ~20 years ago, that came to this island hunting for treasure under a map for 3 weeks with no result.
- Climbed the island’s tallest cliff alone — “Hmm, that cliff… the captain was standing in front of it the whole time.” (p. 19)
- At the top: five treasure chests. Tried to grab one; slipped, fell, landed inside an open chest, got stuck.
- Woke up to see his crewmates’ ship sailing away without him. “They’re sailing!!!” (p. 20)
- Has spent 20 years on the island, guarding what he assumed was the contents of the five chests, mostly scaring away other treasure-hunters with the “trial of the forest” gag.
Chapter 22 events
- First appears as an off-panel voice claiming to be the Guardian of the Forest, then as a treasure-chest-with-a-human-head crawling out of the foliage (p. 9-11). Shoots at Luffy with a pistol; bullet bounces off Luffy’s rubber body.
- Recognizes Luffy as a Gum-Gum Fruit user (p. 12) — “The fruit of the Gum-Gum tree… I’ve heard the tales.”
- Explains the geography of the Grand Line as third-party confirmation while Nami draws the map (pp. 15-16).
- Calls the One Piece a “fool’s dream” (p. 17) but admits he still has hope (p. 17, panel 5).
- Tells his stuck-in-the-chest backstory (pp. 18-20).
- Refuses to let Luffy break the chest to free him (p. 12 — “if you break the chest you’ll break me with it”).
- Accepts Luffy’s offer to retrieve the cliff-top treasure on his behalf (p. 22).
- Discovers (with Luffy on the cliff-top) that all five chests are empty (pp. 24-26).
- Refuses Luffy’s offer to join the Straw Hat crew (p. 28); chooses to stay and care for the island’s strange-creature population (the Lion-Pig, Snake-Rabbit, etc.).
- Final farewell with Luffy at the boat (pp. 29-30): “Now go find the One Piece… and make the world your oyster!! You’ll get yourself a great crew!!”
