The pattern (predictive)
Every Straw Hat backstory is a Chouchou variant. The recipe:
- An absent loved one (dead, taken, gone) who entrusted the character with a thing — a hat, a sword, a flag, a kingdom, a promise, a name.
- The thing’s value is entirely stewardship, not utility. The thing means nothing without the absent person.
- The character guards the thing despite all rational arguments to abandon it.
- Luffy reads the situation and helps preserve the stewardship, not the thing itself.

Why this matters
Chapter 13 is the smallest, cleanest, lowest-stakes version of the recipe Oda runs for every later Straw Hat backstory. Reading One Piece for the Chouchou-shape is the most reliable way to predict the emotional load-bearing structure of a new character’s introduction. The Chouchou parable is also the in-series articulation of the thesis the entire series’s “treasure” framing rests on: the thing is never the point; the carrying-it-for-someone is.
