The payoff
Why this matters
The time-has-passed deflation strips Wapol’s pretension at the exact moment of his villain-speech. It also provides visual evidence the castle has been derelict for years — long enough for wildlife to colonize military hardware — which sits in tension with Ch. 133’s “a few months ago” framing of the Blackbeard conquest. (Possible reconciliation: the weapon was already mothballed under Wapol’s reign and only re-discovered now.) Continues the Ch. 140 baby-snow-birds register — Drum Castle as wildlife refuge under Kureha’s tenure — and recasts the kingdom’s military arsenal as part of that same refuge-architecture.
