The seed
Ch. 0178 — Luffy is mummified during the Rainbase duel: Crocodile’s direct skin-contact desiccates the body, draining moisture and leaving a husk-state. Luffy suffers the attack but does not die. The mummification-mechanic is the Suna-Suna no Mi’s signature lethality-mode — distinct from sand-tornado / sand-blade attacks (combat-utility) by being a coup-de-grâce mechanic.
The payoff
Ch. 0179 — Toh-Toh is killed by the same mummification-mechanic at Yuba. The kill-mode is confirmed as lethal when prolonged (Luffy survived because Crocodile released the hold before full desiccation; Toh-Toh did not get the same release).

Why this matters
Pre-loads forward-canon Suna-Suna no Mi mechanics:
- Water counters desiccation — Luffy’s eventual rematch strategy hinges on remaining hydrated/bloodied (Ch. 0198+).
- Mummification-as-Logia-tier-lethality — establishes the Logia-tier kill-doctrine: a Logia user with a kill-mode mechanic (rather than just intangibility) is a top-tier threat. Pre-loads later Logia kill-mode reveals (Aokiji freeze-shatter, Akainu magma-vaporize).
