The payoff

The Ch. 165 parting-gift seed pays off as a Chekhov’s water-skin that saves Luffy’s life. First on-page demonstration that water defeats Crocodile’s Logia desiccation — this is the forward-canon arc-climax mechanic in its install-form. (The offensive water-against-Crocodile application is forward-canon.)
