The Ch. 0156 “Friendship is not determined by how much time you spent together” doctrine is here proven by the largest action available to Bon Clay. Having known the crew only briefly, he splits Hina’s fleet with a Going-Merry decoy, wears Luffy’s face as a feint, dances the “Last Waltz” on his swan-ship deck, and surrenders himself to Hina’s capture so the Straw Hats escape (“…a friend of the Straw Hat gang!!”, p. 17). First on-page Bon-Clay-sacrifices-himself-for-friends beat — the doctrine articulated at first sight (Ch. 0156) is lived up to at the arc-finale. THIS AIN’T NO ACT!!’ The Ch. 156 Friendship is not determined by how much time you spent together doctrine is here invoked in adversarial register — Bon Clay structurally knows the Strawhat sentimentality-grammar, and is operationalizing it as a tactical-vulnerability map for the Nami-face chivalry-trap (pp. 16-17).
