Why this matters
Two characters in two different registers (victim’s-rage / family’s-affection) call Nami the same epithet — witch. The shared epithet across hostile and intimate registers confirms that Nami operates as Arlong’s crew, and her own region knows her as Arlong’s enforcer. The Ch. 8 “I rob pirates” self-introduction is locally inverted — Coco Village’s surrounding region knows Nami as Arlong’s witch. The chapter holds two contradictory reputations for the same character as the arc’s foundational tension.
The payoff
Partial-confirmed in Ch. 70 (Nami is on Arlong’s side, but the why is held off-page). Full payoff is the Arlong-arc flashback (Bell-mère’s death, the 100M ransom, the cartographer-slave arrangement).
Ch. 78 backstory-source
Ch. 78 installs the Bell-mère-killed-by-Arlong origin event that — through the post-death buyback-contract mechanism (pending Ch. 79+) — explains why Nami operates as an Arlong-officer despite the village’s hatred. The Ch. 70 Nami-as-witch tells now receive their backstory-source: Nami’s Arlong-affiliation traces to Bell-mère’s murder.
