Name meaning
ヒューマンドリル Hyūmandoriru (VIZ 'Humandrills') is a portmanteau of English **human** + **mandrill** (Mandrillus sphinx, the large Old-World baboon) — the wiki glosses the creature literally as 'a type of mandrill.' The 'human' half encodes their defining trait: they imitate any human behaviour they witness (here, war and weapon-use), so a 'human-mandrill' is a baboon that has learned to be human. A '-drill' (Mandrillus leucophaeus) is itself the mandrill's smaller relative, so the name doubles as the real primate naming family.

Profile

Humandrills — intelligent baboons native to Gloom Island (Kuraigana) that imitate the humans they observe; “if they lived near peaceful folk, they’d learn to be peaceful.” Having grown up amid the war that ravaged the island “until seven years ago,” they learned to wield human weapons and tactics and became “warriors of the forest” — a genuine match for an injured swordsman. Zoro trains against them while stranded at Mihawk’s castle (named @0592, pp. 6-7). race_tier fauna: a notable non-sapient animal group, not a people.

Etymology

Confidence: high · ヒューマンドリル Hyūmandoriru (VIZ “Humandrills”) = human + mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx, the large baboon) — the One Piece Wiki glosses them literally as “a type of mandrill.” The “human-” prefix is load-bearing: their defining trait is mimicking any human behaviour they observe, so a “human-mandrill” is a baboon that learned to be human (here, weapon-use and war). A real drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) is the mandrill’s close relative, so the coinage also rides the actual primate naming family. Source: One Piece Wiki — Humandrills.
