The seed

In Ch. 328 (pp. 14–20) Usopp is beaten, robbed of the crew’s ~200 million berries by the Franky Family (suitcases swapped), and abducted; found dumped in the downtown plaza, he breaks down with intense self-blame.

Pairing his shame with the just-delivered verdict that the Merry can’t be fixed at all (see Going Merry Keel Irreparable Death Sentence) sets up the Usopp-vs-Luffy conflict over the ship’s fate.

The payoff
