The seed

The three variables

  1. Buoyancy — Sanji’s strikes are damped underwater; he cannot deliver a normal kick-tier force to break the chain.
  2. Breath — Sanji has no oxygen tank, must surface periodically; bounds the time-window for the rescue-attempt.
  3. Chain-attached-to-rock — Luffy cannot be carried to surface without freeing him from the rock first; even at surface, he remains anchored.

The chapter installs the three-variable problem as the chapter’s pacing-mechanic. Each variable is independently solvable; the three-way intersection is the dilemma.

Forward-payoff

Every later Straw-Hat-falls-in-water rescue-scenario re-keys to this Ch. 85 three-variable install:

  • Sabaody coating (Ch. 496+) — buoyancy + breath problem solved by the coating-ship; the DF-user-in-water problem is canonized institutionally.
  • Fish-Man Island arrival (Ch. 605+) — extended underwater operation; multiple DF-users.
  • Whole Cake mirror-world / cake-escape — Sanji’s underwater navigation pays off the rescue-grammar.

The drowning-clock register continues in Ch. 86+ until Luffy is rescued.
