Ch. 841 —
Origin of the dream (Germa childhood flashback)
As a child in the Germa dungeon, Sanji is given a cookbook, reads of the All Blue (p.7), and resolves “to be a cook” (p.10). The defining dream of his Baratie / East-Blue arc traces to this single book — its in-universe origin , revealed ~795 chapters after the dream was first named.
Ch. 46 introduces Sanji with three of the four classic Straw Hat character-elements: identity (cook), method (kicks), and ethics (cooking-as-mercy). The dream is conspicuously absent — Sanji’s stated aspiration is stasis (“I’ll cook here forever!!!” ), not adventure.
The negative-space here is the missing dream . Every Straw Hat introduced so far has named a dream on first appearance:

Ch. 46 page 4 — Sanji declares stasis, not a dream
“I’ll cook here forever!!! You can’t kick me out!!!” / “I won’t die. I’ll live another hundred years. Until you die!!!” Sanji’s first declared aspiration is stasis — explicitly not to leave . This is the anti-recruitment vow analog of Usopp’s Ch. 40 disbandment of the Usopp Pirates: every recruit must shed a prior commitment before joining. Sanji’s prior commitment is his vow to Zeff.
The payoff
Forward-prediction: Sanji’s dream (the All Blue) will be the on-page revelation that unsticks his Baratie-vow and enables his recruitment. Pays off in the Zeff-backstory chapters (Ch. 56-58) and the recruitment scene (Ch. 68).
Ch. 67 pages 11-12 —
All Blue redeployed as recruitment-vector
Sanji’s “Ever hear… …of the All Blue?” (page 11) to Luffy, followed by Zeff’s “He still lights up when he talks about it… The fool” (page 12) overhearing-with-affection. The Ch. 56-58 dream-named arc is here redeployed as the recruitment-pivot rationale — the dream is no longer just a named MacGuffin , it is the Sanji-recruitment justification in active dialogue. The mentor’s overhearing confirms the transmitted-dream is operative across the recruitment-pivot moment.
Ch. 58 page 16 — All Blue
mentor-source confirmed: Zeff named the dream first
“Because you had… the same dream as me. … All Blue!! It exists. When the time comes, head for the Grand Line.” The negative-space withheld dream prediction is resolved , but with an inversion: the dream is mentor-transmitted, not self-discovered — Zeff names the dream first, then transmits it to Sanji. Sanji is the first Straw Hat whose dream is inherited from a mentor . The recruitment-pattern’s mentor-as-dream-source sub-template is born here. The Ch. 57 child-Sanji declaration (“I’M GONNA FIND THE ALL BLUE!!!” ) is now revealed to be a post-Zeff-transmission utterance — Sanji already had the dream from Zeff before he declared it under attack. Additionally: Zeff is the first named-on-page Grand Line eyewitness of the All Blue (page 16: “All Blue!! It exists.” ) — the dream’s realness is also confirmed on-page in this chapter.
Ch. 57 page 8 —
All Blue named on-page for the first time in the series
Child-Sanji, mid-attack-defense, head bleeding from a club-strike, knife in his teeth, in a full-width silhouette panel: “I’M GONNA FIND THE ALL BLUE!!!” for the first time in the series . The dream is articulated under attack, under defeat, under duress. The Straw Hat named-dream-in-backstory rule’s third installment. Zeff’s pirate-cook crew openly laughs at the dream (page 9: “There ain’t no ‘All Blue,’ not even on the Grand Line!!” ); Zeff himself does not laugh — the mentor’s non-laughter is the chapter’s quietest forward-tell. The dream is introduced under derision — the standard Straw Hat recruitment grammar.
Note: this entry corrects the Ch. 56 first naming claim — Ch. 56 was the first present-day naming (Sanji to the Baratie cooks); Ch. 57’s child-Sanji declaration is chronologically and narratively the first on-page articulation of the dream in the series.
Ch. 56 page 15-16 —
the All Blue is named on-page for the first time
Sanji to the Baratie cooks: “Yes… The ‘All Blue’.” / “It’s the name of the legendary ocean.” The Ch. 46 negative-space withheld-dream seed is resolved at the name-level . Sanji’s missing fourth Straw-Hat-element (dream) is articulated. The what is it / where is it / why it matters layers are deferred to Ch. 57+. The dream-as-recruitment-MacGuffin has its first installment-payoff; the recruitment-pivot is loaded for the post-Krieg-arc payoff.
The dream is also established as a guild-wide aspiration of seafaring-cooks (page 16-17 Orbit cooks: “We’re seafaring cooks. We’ve all dreamed of sailing that ocean at least once.” ). The All Blue is not a Sanji-individual dream — it is the seafaring-cooks-guild dream. This canonizes the dream as a multi-character cultural register and a world-building element, not just a Sanji-MacGuffin.
Why this matters
The withheld-dream introduction is itself a structural signal — Oda has deliberately withheld the standard Straw-Hat-dream beat so that its eventual articulation is the recruitment-pivot. Negative-space-as-foreshadowing: the absence of an expected element is itself the seed.
