The seed
Ch. 74 pages 10-15. Nami publicly performs an apparent killing of Usopp in front of Arlong and his crew:
- Page 10: Nami declares she will eliminate Usopp; Arlong cheers.
- Page 12: THWACK from a bo-staff (a stunning-strike weapon, not a killing weapon).
- Page 13: I had no choice. It’s business. Then DIE QUIETLY… + SHLUK — blade strike, framed off-panel.
- Page 15: SPLASH — Usopp’s body shoved into the sea.
Hidden tells:
- The bo-staff is a non-lethal weapon; Nami chose it from a rack on the wall (page 8) over any of the killing-weapons presumably also available at the Arlong-Pirates’ armory.
- The blade-strike is framed off-panel — the reader does not see where it lands.
- Nami’s last warning to Usopp (page 10): “Beware Usopp… here, I’m not the Nami you knew!!” — the here qualifier is the performance-cue tell.
- The die quietly phrasing is a stage-direction, not a kill-order.
- Nami’s I had no choice. It’s business line is euphemism, not commitment.
What it predicts
The chapter installs the fake-execution-of-a-crewmate-as-loyalty-cover beat as a Nami-tactic. Forward-pattern: every later Straw Hat appears to coldly betray the crew chapter (Usopp at Water 7, Robin at Enies Lobby, Sanji on Whole Cake Island) operates downstream of this Ch. 74 prototype. The reader is taught — by Ch. 74’s fake-kill — to check for performance-tells when a Straw Hat appears to betray.
