The technique

Naming a top-tier opponent with a degraded epithet — typically by replacing a high-status word in the opponent’s name/epithet with a low-status word from the same semantic field. The rhetoric serves as:

• Loyalty marker — the speaker is demonstrating partisanship for the duelist.
• Tier-denial — the rename refuses to acknowledge the opponent’s actual tier.
• Emotional-stake amplifier — the rename is only used by speakers who are emotionally invested in the duel’s outcome.
