The seed
Ch. 170 cover splash — Django cover-arc Vol. 35: Dracule Mihawk hypnotizes Django to forget their friendship. The cover-story canonizes that Mihawk and Django know each other personally (pre-Strawhat-encounter East-Blue acquaintance) — a relationship the on-page main narrative has never hinted at.
Why this matters
First explicit Mihawk has prior personal relationships with named East-Blue villains reveal. Pre-loads:
- The Mihawk-Shanks-Buggy historical-relationship network (Mihawk-Shanks is canon Marineford; Shanks-Buggy is canon Ch. 0019 SBS / Roger-crew flashback). Adds Mihawk-Django as a third edge in the network.
- The wider Warlord-tier characters have hidden friendship-histories doctrine — Warlords are not lonely peaks but socially-embedded in a network that pre-dates the on-page story.
- The cover-arc-as-character-network-leak technique — cover-stories are the channel through which Oda exposes off-page relationships that would slow the main narrative.
The hypnotic-erasure mechanism is also notable: Mihawk presumably used Django’s own Mane Mane no Mi-adjacent Devil Fruit (Jiki Jiki / Joko Joko hypnosis fruit) against him. Forward-canon Django’s fruit is Wax-Wax… wait, Wax-Wax is Mr. 3. Django’s fruit is the Hypnosis-Hypnosis (the one… two… Jango!); the cover shows Mihawk using it back on Django.
