The seed
First on-page articulation Ch. 92 page 17 — full-page Luffy face: eyes wide, jagged pupils, gritted teeth, DOOM!! / KREK / KREK. Single dialogue: “USE”? — Luffy repeating Arlong’s framing of Nami as a thing to be used (from page 16: Arlong’s “THINK YOU CAN USE THAT GIRL AS WELL AS I DO!!?”). The chapter installs the specific-word-as-Luffy-rage-trigger combat-rhetoric grammar — Luffy’s rage isn’t activated by physical assault (he just got thrown through an entire building and pinned by a saw); it’s activated by a single instance of dehumanizing framing. The character trait: Luffy rages at dehumanization-of-the-protected, distinct from anger at his own injury.
Forward-pattern
Every later Luffy-rage-trigger traces structurally to this Ch. 92 first instance:
- Enies Lobby Ch. 397: Robin’s “I WANT TO LIVE!!! TAKE ME OUT TO SEA WITH YOU!!!” triggers Luffy’s declare-war-on-the-World-Government rage-state.
- Marineford Ch. 574: Ace’s death triggers Luffy’s Garp-rejection / shutdown / rage state.
- Alabasta: the Vivi is alone / Vivi is suffering register triggers the Crocodile-rage state.
- Whole Cake (Ch. 855+): Sanji’s I am no longer free register triggers the Big-Mom-Crew rage.
The Ch. 92 install is the arc-climax pivot — the actual Luffy-defeats-Arlong combat-sequence (Ch. 93+) will erupt from this rage-state.
