The seed

First on-page named appearance Ch. 92 page 3 — Luffy holds both forearms together in front of face as defensive guard against Arlong’s incoming Shark Darts. GUM-GUM… SHIELD!!! (TUMP!). On its first deployment the Shield does more than defend — it bounces Arlong’s velocity-attack back upward into the Park roof (page 5, BWOING / WHA-BAM!!!). The chapter installs the rubber-rebounds-velocity-attacks combat-grammar (companion to Ch. 65 iterated-impact-cracks-armor). The Shield is active-defensive-rubber-folding — distinct from the Ch. 15 Gum-Gum Balloon (passive defense-by-inflation). The Gum-Gum technique-tree’s defense-class now has two named entries (Balloon + Shield) alongside its strike-class (Pistol/Bullet), transport-class (Rocket), wide-strike (Whip), finisher (Bazooka), multi-hit (Gatling), heel-drop (Battle-Ax), piercing (Bullet). Forward-pattern: post-timeskip Haki-coated and Gear-4 Iron-coated Shield variants.
