The seed

Kuina = Kuina (Japanese: 水鶏 / クイナ) = the water rail — a marsh-bird species often listed as flightless. Kuina the character died young, denied her swordsman-future by her gender (her father told her her body would betray her ambition). The bird-name is a thematic seal: the flightless girl who could not fly past her fate.
Tashigi = Tashigi (Japanese: 田鴫 / タシギ) = the common snipe — also a small waterbird. Tashigi is a forward-canon Marine swordswoman who looks identical to Kuina; she is the Kuina-who-survives, the flightless bird that learned to fly. Her first on-page appearance is in Loguetown.
Nojiko = Nojiko (Japanese: 野路子 / ノジコ) = the Japanese yellow bunting (Emberiza sulphurata). Nami’s adoptive sister; the East-Blue female-character bird-name convention extends to the Conomi Islands.
