The seed

Amid the buried ruins the giant serpent is shown crying (“It’s crying,” Ch. 273 page 11) and behaving as if “looking for something” rather than simply attacking (page 10). Oda foregrounds the monster’s grief in the very ruins the Shandians call their homeland.

Why it matters: A textbook emotional-seed / negative-space tell — a “monster” given grief it has no reason to feel, planted for a later reveal that the serpent has a personal history with the lost city (paying off in the Shandora / Calgara backstory). The serpent is shown here but not named on-page in this batch (the giant snake is referenced descriptively, never by a personal name). (Inference on the specific payoff.)

Generalize: when Oda gives a “monster” prop an unmotivated emotion (here, weeping / searching) in the exact location tied to a buried-history mystery, the creature is a delayed-payoff vessel for that history — its sorrow is the negative-space pointer to a backstory the arc has not yet told.
