The seed
Ch. 71 page 16 — Usopp voice-over (interpreting Genzo’s weapons collection): “Weapons give birth to wicked thoughts and violence!! They’re the number one threat to the peace.” Genzo’s own framing: “Can’t a guy have a collection? I’ve always liked looking at weapons.”
Why this matters
The chapter installs Genzo’s weapons-collection as camouflage — under Arlong’s regime, the village cannot openly stockpile weapons; Genzo maintains his appreciation as a quiet exception. The weapons-give-birth-to-violence doctrine is the village-pacifism-under-Arlong-tax register — a survival-mode ideology that justifies the village’s weapons-prohibition surrender to the occupying fishman-pirate crew.
The doctrine has a double-truth structure:
- Literal: weapons cause violence (Arlong’s logic — humans with weapons might rebel).
- Operational: the village’s weapons-prohibition is enforced surrender, not chosen pacifism.
Forward-payoff: the Arlong-arc resolution may pivot on whether the village’s weapons are operationally available for the climax fight or have been entirely surrendered. Genzo’s collection is the last reserve — the village’s weapons of last resort.
