The seed
Sanji has never met Bell-mère. He arrived at Cocoyasi only in Ch. 73, after Bell-mère had died (Ch. 78 flashback) — he knows her only through Nami’s backstory (Ch. 80) and Genzo’s defense of the grove (Ch. 80) and the village’s collective grief. Yet at the post-arc-climax villain-punishment scene, Sanji strikes Nezumi specifically for wrecking Belle-mère’s tangerine grove — a wound that is Nami’s, not his.
Why this matters
The chapter installs the crew-fights-the-recruit’s-wound-by-proxy composition. The crew has internalized the recruit’s family-wound enough to fight on her behalf even without first-hand emotional stakes. Sanji’s chivalry-toward-women doctrine here lands its first arc-payoff outside the romance register — it is protection-of-the-recruit’s-dead-mother’s-property that triggers the kick, not flirtation.
The chapter also paints Nami’s strike (page 11, ‘This is for Nojiko…’) in the same panel-pattern — proxy-vengeance for a foster-sister’s wound. The composition is mirror-symmetric: Sanji’s proxy-strike is for-a-person-he-never-met; Nami’s proxy-strike is for-a-person-she-knows-intimately. Both are valid; both install the crew-grammar.
