The seed
The payoff
(Pending — the swan-rings as non-negotiable crown-of-self are forward-canon Bon Clay’s persistent-prop signature. Forward-canon Impel Down + post-Impel-Down beats should consistently feature the swan-rings as the identity-prop that survives every disguise.)
Why this matters
Oda’s prop-as-self-anchor grammar: the character’s psychological stability depends on a small wearable item that survives all transformations. Bon Clay’s Mane Mane can copy any face, but the swan-rings he wears as himself cannot be displaced — they are restored even before the face is. The ring-going-on-while-wearing-someone-else’s-face is the clearest visual tell in the series that the user’s identity is not their face. Cross-link Ch. 0154 ballet-tutu and Ch. 0156 swan-feather travel-coat as ancillary props; the swan-rings are canonized here as the non-negotiable crown-of-self.
