Bartolomeo goads Hack into a from-behind “Fist,” says “Psyche,” and Hack’s blow is stopped by nothing visible — Hack ends up writhing while the crowd gawks (“What did he just do?! …Somehow it’s Hack writhing on the ground!!”). A textbook negative-space plant: the result is on-page, the mechanism is withheld. Pairs with Bartolomeo’s earlier teased dread-reputation; the narrative is promising an explanation of how an apparent buffoon shrugs off a karate master.
Why it matters: establishes Bartolomeo as far more dangerous than his clowning suggests and seeds the reveal of his Devil-Fruit power (currently unnamed on-page). FORWARD-GUARD: do not name the fruit until it is named in-range.
The payoff
Bartolomeo names his power — “I ate the barrier-barrier fruit… I’m a barrier-man!!! ” — confirming the unseen mechanism that repelled Hack @0708 is an invisible, passive Devil-Fruit barrier : anyone who attacks it is hurt by their own blow (Hack p. 2, Bellamy p. 8). He goes on to block Elizabello II’s King Punch and finish Block B with Barrier Crush (p. 17). The negative-space “how does a buffoon shrug off a karate master?” is answered as the Bari Bari no Mi.
