The seed

As Ace is escorted up to the platform three hours before noon, he flashes back to a childhood oath with Luffy: “Listen, Luffy! …live our lives without regrets!”; “Someday we’ll go to sea and live however we want!”; “A LIFE OF TRUE FREEDOM!!” (pp. 18-20). The vow is keyed precisely to the chains and the scaffold — freedom invoked at the exact moment freedom is being taken.

Why it matters

The juxtaposition reads as deliberate tragic-irony setup for the execution climax: the more the boyhood freedom-oath is foregrounded here, the heavier its negation at the platform. Pending; payoff is forward of this window.
