Zoro-Bamboo-Cover-Story
The series’ first sustained solo cover-story (the prototype B-plot template). Tracks Zoro offstage during the Orange Town arc while Luffy fights Buggy. The composition (bamboo + samurai-panda + Japanese-coded framing) is also a long-burn visual-foreshadowing seed for Zoro’s Wano-arc Japanese-coded identity (see Shimotsuki).

- Ch. 9 — Cover page: Zoro character feature (second consecutive Zoro cover — the first solo-cover stretch for any character in the series).
- Ch. 20 — Zoro stands sword-raised in a bamboo grove with a chubby panda companion wearing samurai armor and a sword at its hip. Start of Zoro’s solo cover-story B-plot. Cut bamboo stumps litter the foreground (training-cutting bamboo). Wardrobe shift to clean white shirt (not his East Blue clothes) — ready-for-action register.
- Ch. 25 — PAYOFF (covered in main-text): Zoro rejoins the active plot at the Kaya Estate confrontation. Functions as visual confirmation that the cover-story Zoro of Ch. 20 has rejoined the active plot; the bamboo-grove side adventure resolved offscreen.
Notes
- The Zoro cover-story is the template that the entire later cover-story B-plot convention is built on (the Buggy cover-arc explicitly imitates this structure). The cover-story B-plot becomes one of Oda’s signature paratext-foreshadowing channels.
- The samurai-panda + bamboo composition is a Wano-coded forward-tell that pays off decades later in the manga’s run. Worth crossreferencing
