The Flavor of Sand
Vol. 18 frontispiece — The Flavor of Sand
What’s shown
Vol. 18 frontispiece — color group-portrait of the seven post-Drum Straw Hats arrayed around Crocodile. Composition (front to back): Luffy (front-center, white desert turban, chewing a date-fruit, signature wide grin) / Sanji (front-left, brown turban, suit-shirt) / Chopper (front-right, X-cross hat, holding cotton-candy) / Nami (left, looking down, white turban) / Usopp (center-mid, goggles, polishing equipment) / Vivi (right, blonde hair, gold-crescent earring, gentle smile) / Zoro (back-left, white-bandage shirt, sword over shoulder) / Crocodile (center-back, fur-collar dark coat, iron hook visible at his left, desert-walking staff in right hand, looming sun-disc behind him).
What it might mean
- First volume-frontispiece composition that composes the arc-antagonist into the protagonist group portrait. The composition signals Vol. 18 as the Crocodile-volume — the arc-antagonist is now equal-frame to the Strawhat ensemble. Template-installer for the forward-canon Vol-frontispiece-includes-arc-antagonist grammar (cf. later Vol-22 cobra-coffin, Vol-41 CP9, etc.).
- First on-page visual appearance of Crocodile in Ch. 0165 — the Vol. 18 frontispiece is technically Crocodile’s chapter-debut frame (p. 1 of Ch. 0165), pre-empting his full standing-tableau reveal at the Rain Dinners summit (p. 11).
- Iron hook visible at Crocodile’s left — the prosthetic is on-page from the very first frame of the chapter (in the frontispiece’s Crocodile-on-the-left-side of the composition; the in-story full-body reveal at p. 11 places it explicitly).
- The desert-walking staff + sun-disc + sand-tableau install the sand-lord-archetype-architecture at maximum-visibility.
- The food-props (date-fruit, cotton-candy) install Vol. 18’s The Flavor of Sand theme — desert-foods sub-motif.
