SBS Volume 47
Thriller-Bark-launch SBS — the CANON-LEAK MOTHERLODE volume. Major canon-leaks:
- RYUMA = the Ryuma from “MONSTERS” (Oda’s one-shot in the Wanted! collection). The Thriller Bark zombie Ryuma is canonically the same character; in the OP world he died of sickness as a legendary swordsman. Crosses Oda’s one-shot universe into OP canon explicitly.
- GARP is NOT the pirate from “ROMANCE DAWN” (Oda’s One Piece pilot one-shot). The Romance Dawn Garp was Luffy’s grandpa AND a pirate; canonical OP Garp is “a true blue Marine, from birth till death.” Explicit canon-divergence statement.
- CP9 ages (canonized): Lucci 28, Kaku 23, Jabra 35, Blueno 30, Kumadori 34, Fukurou 29, Kalifa 25, Spandam 39.
- Koby = May 13, Helmeppo = July 16 (pun-derived birthdays, Oda ratifies).
- Koby’s transformation was a growth spurt, NOT plastic surgery (“haven’t you ever seen a boy who comes back from summer vacation looking like a different person?!”). Koby co-signs: “RIGHT!”
- Awa Awa no Mi (Kalifa) = Paramecia confirmed, not Logia. “Kalifa creates bubbles with her body and still retains her normal body.” Mechanism: “Rub her, and the bubbles come.”
- Three new Devil Fruits named (Marine HQ captains, anime debut, fanbook “One Piece Yellow”):
- Beri Beri no Mi (Captain Very Good — Grapeman): body parts turn round/puffy like grapes, rearrangeable.
- Sabi Sabi no Mi (Captain Shu — Rustman): can rust any metal he touches. THIS IS THE MAN WHO RUINED ZORO’S YUBASHIRI.
- Shari Shari no Mi (Captain Sharinguru — Wheelman): body parts turn into wheels, spin wildly, high attack.
- Robin’s Hana Hana sprouted limbs ARE part of her body: she feels everything she touches, and damage to sprouts = damage to her own body. (Confirms the squeezing-Franky’s-balls scene — yes, she felt it. “Girls, NEVER DO THIS.”)
- Chopper is only sexually un-interested in HUMAN women — “He can speak human words, but he’s still a reindeer. He could fall in love with a human because of his mind, but he won’t be aroused by her looks. He just might be smitten with a really beautiful reindeer, though.”
- Kokoro’s chest-shells = “NuBra” with suction bearing the fate of world peace.
- Marine salute uses the back of the hand (not the side like real-world) — because sailors’ hands were blackened by rope-tar; showing blackened hands to a superior was rude; saluting back-of-hand is a Marines’ “courtesy.”
- “Direction” in OP = clock-positions (12 = front, 6 = behind, etc.), not cardinal directions.
- 40,971 panels drawn through 45 volumes (reader count, Oda confirms).
Q&A
Chapter 450, Page 26 — CP9 ages canonized
Q (Tada-san): When reading SBS, please make sure the room is well-lit… A: Such kind words! I thought I was being screwed over once again!
Q (Pacchon): What should one do if Enel shot down lightning bolts? A: Duck at high speed, give him the golden right with rotation! If you can’t hit him, cover your bellybutton, cry and surrender!
Q (No. 1): Tell us the ages of the members of CP9. Please, Shigan!
A:
| CP9 Member | Age |
|---|---|
| Lucci | 28 |
| Kaku | 23 |
| Jabra | 35 |
| Blueno | 30 |
| Kumadori | 34 |
| Fukurou | 29 |
| Kalifa | 25 |
| Spandam | 39 |
Q (Prince): What would happen if you picked your nose with Shigan? A: AAAAAAGGGGHHH!!!
Chapter 451, Page 46 — THREE NEW DEVIL FRUIT NAMES + Kokoro shell-bra
Q (Mugi-mugi): Vol 44 had Marine HQ captains with Devil Fruits, including a balls-man and the rustman (Sabi Sabi no Mi). What are the names and abilities?
A: These were described in the fanbook “One Piece Yellow”, but for those without it:
- Captain Very Good (Beri Beri no Mi): Grapeman. The parts of his body turn round and puffy like grapes, which he can rearrange as he likes.
- Captain Shu (Sabi Sabi no Mi): Rustman. He can rust any metals he touches. This is the man who ruined Zoro’s sword, Yubashiri.
- Captain Sharinguru (Shari Shari no Mi): Wheelman. Parts of his body turn into wheels and spin wildly. High attack strength.
(Note: Beri = “berry”, sabi = “to rust”, sharin = “wheel”.)
Q (I Love Grandma): What are those THINGS on Kokoro-san’s chest, shells? Or evolved scales? A NuBra? A: I suppose I can’t just answer “I don’t want to think about it”? It’s KIND of like a “NuBra”. And you’d better believe that suction is bearing the fate of world peace! Hang in there, shell “NuBra”!!
Chapter 452, Page 66 — Chopper-reindeer attraction + KOBY MAY 13 / HELMEPPO JULY 16
Q (18, Female): Why does Chopper say “I’m not interested in naked women” in Ch. 446? A: You might want to read closer. He says “I’m not interested in naked HUMAN women”. He can speak human words, but he’s still a reindeer! He can fall in love with a human because of his mind, but he won’t be aroused by her looks. He just might be smitten with a really beautiful reindeer, though.
Q (Kukri): I’m TOTALLY in love with the new manly looks of Koby and Helmeppo! Tell me their birthdays! How about May 13 for Koby (Ko=Go=5, B looks like 13) and July 16 for Helmeppo (Nana-hikari musuko / “idiot son”, Nana=7, hi+mu=16)? A: Well… You answered your own question. Works for me.
Q (Mayuko Wakayama): How do you respond to the charges that the Oda Clinic performed full plastic surgery on Koby?! A: He’s hit his growth spurt! Boys grow in an instant! He just tightened his muscles up a bit with some good discipline. Right, Koby? Koby: RIGHT!
Chapter 454, Page 106 — AWA AWA = PARAMECIA + Jump-order is editor-decided
Q (Yasumo): Is the order of the manga in Jump decided by popularity? A: Not quite. The order is decided every week by the Jump sub-chief editor. Most popular series are placed in the front. Sometimes he decides “we’re pushing THIS one this week.”
Q (Fruit Punch Samurai): Is Kalifa’s Awa Awa no Mi really Paramecia, and not Logia type?
A: Kalifa creates bubbles with her body and still retains her normal body, so she’s Paramecia. Rub her, and the bubbles come. Handy, isn’t it?
Chapter 455, Page 126 — Marumieta/Yamenahare + ROBIN FEELS THROUGH SPROUTS
Q (Gengerous Zone): Who’s the rich young lady with binoculars in Ch. 436-437? A: Allow me to introduce Lady Marumieta (“I can see all”). Her manservant beside her is Yamenahare (“Now you stop that”). She is the only daughter of Bimine, the mayor of “Gourmet Town” Pucci, which is connected to Water Seven via the Sea Express. Most ignorant of the ways of the world. She came here to deliver emergency Aqua Laguna supplies and ended up witnessing the most extraordinary event.
Q (Nico Aya-chan): Is Robin supposed to be based on ME? A: …Uh, yeah.
Q: In Vol 45, Robin squeezed Franky in a very important place. CAN SHE FEEL WHAT SHE’S SQUEEZING?
A: Yes, she can. All the arms and legs she sprouts are part of her body. She feels the things she touches, and when she’s hurt, that damage is done to her own body. So you see… She really DID grab his balls!! Girls, NEVER DO THIS. They’re very tender!!
Chapter 457, Page 166 — RYUMA = MONSTERS + GARP ≠ ROMANCE DAWN PIRATE
Q (Sen-chan): What would Franky’s jolly roger be? A: Since every crew member seems to need their own, how about this? (→)
Q (Satoru-pyon): Is the swordsman “Ryuma” who once defeated a dragon the same Ryuma from your short story “Monsters” in your collection volume “Wanted!”?
Q (Nao): I re-read “Romance Dawn” and noticed Luffy’s grandpa was basically the same guy as Vice Admiral Garp! Was Garp once the captain of a crew of pirates?
A: I’ll tackle Ryuma’s first. The zombie Ryuma appears in Chapter 450 from this volume, and he is indeed the Ryuma who starred in “Monsters”. In the world of One Piece, he’s now a legendary swordsman who died of sickness. I wouldn’t have minded if this had just slipped through the cracks, but I was happy to see that so many people noticed.
Next, Garp. He appeared as Luffy’s grandpa, and a pirate no less, in the one-shot that served as the basis for One Piece. He might look the same, but I want you to see these as different stories. Grandpa Garp from THIS One Piece is a true blue Marine, from birth till death!!
Chapter 458, Page 186 — Marine salute origin + clock-directions + 40,971 panels
Q (Like That): Aren’t Marine salutes backward? You should salute with the SIDE of your hand against the forehead! A: Yes, it is a bit different, but there’s a reason. Sailors pull all sorts of ropes on a sailboat, and the tar on the ropes makes their hands filthy and black. It would be rude to show those blackened hands to a superior officer, so they salute showing the back of the hand. It’s the kind of courtesy you’d expect from the Marines.
Q (-kun Behind You):** What does it mean when people mention directions like 9 o’clock or 12 o’clock? A: Imagine a clock with you in the middle. 12 o’clock is right in front of you, 6 o’clock is right behind you. You just think of the ship the same way. There’s no east west north south; you just use the directions you see.
Q (Mr. 9’s First Apprentice, Tatsuya): I counted 40,971 panels drawn in 45 volumes! A: You really counted them. Thanks a lot! See you next volume!!
Notable canon-leaks
- RYUMA = MONSTERS-Ryuma (canonical cross-universe integration): the zombie swordsman in Thriller Bark Ch. 450 is the same character from Oda’s pre-OP one-shot “Monsters” (in the Wanted! collection). This means his “killed a dragon” Wano legend is canonical, his sword (Shusui) is the Wano national treasure, and Oda’s one-shot universe explicitly bridges OP. → Massive cross-link to Thriller Bark / Wano arcs.
- GARP IS NOT THE ROMANCE-DAWN PIRATE — explicit canon-divergence: Oda’s “Romance Dawn” pilot had Luffy’s grandpa Garp as a pirate. Canonical OP Garp is “a true blue Marine, from birth till death.” Resolves the long-running fan question; the Marine-Garp identity is permanent and load-bearing for Marineford and the Garp-Roger friendship.
- CP9 ages (canonical): Lucci 28 / Kaku 23 / Jabra 35 / Blueno 30 / Kumadori 34 / Fukurou 29 / Kalifa 25 / Spandam 39. Note Spandam is the oldest (39) — only ~11 years older than Lucci, despite being the boss.
- Koby = May 13 / Helmeppo = July 16 (pun-derived birthdays, Oda-ratified).
- Koby’s manly transformation = growth spurt (NOT plastic surgery; Oda explicit). Reinforces the boys-grow-instantly register; pre-loads Marineford-era Koby’s Haki awakening.
- Awa Awa no Mi = Paramecia (confirmed), NOT Logia. Mechanism: Kalifa “creates bubbles with her body and still retains her normal body.” The Logia-mimic ambiguity (bubbles-as-element) is resolved permanently — body-modifying Paramecia.
- Three new DF names canonized via SBS (originally fanbook “One Piece Yellow”):
- Beri Beri no Mi (Paramecia) — Captain Very Good. Body parts → grapes.
- Sabi Sabi no Mi (Paramecia) — Captain Shu. Rusts any metal he touches. Confirmed as the man who destroyed Yubashiri — first SBS-disclosure of the Yubashiri-destruction perpetrator’s name and ability. Massive Zoro-arc backfill.
- Shari Shari no Mi (Paramecia) — Captain Sharinguru. Body parts → spinning wheels.
- Robin’s Hana Hana mechanics (canonical): sprouted limbs ARE part of her body — she feels everything she touches, and damage to sprouts is damage to her own body. Resolves the “is she immune via sprouts?” question and reframes Hana Hana as a distributed-body Paramecia, not a mere conjuration. Pre-loads later Wano-era awakening discussions.
- Chopper sexuality canonized: only un-attracted to human women; reindeer attraction intact. Subtle but Oda-explicit: he can mind-love a human but body-attraction requires reindeer form.
- Marumieta / Yamenahare + Pucci-mayor Bimine — three minor Water 7 satellite characters named. Pucci connected to Water 7 via Sea Express (confirms Sea Train multi-station route).
- Kokoro shell-NuBra “bearing the fate of world peace” — joke, but reinforces Kokoro = full mermaid (her chest is shells, not human anatomy).
- Marine salute origin = back-of-hand courtesy (tar-on-rope sailor pragmatic origin). Real-world historical sourcing for an in-world military convention.
- Clock-direction system in OP = relative ship-bearings (12 front, 6 back), not cardinal — useful for re-reading any battle/combat-direction citations.
- Jump magazine ordering = editor-decided, not pure popularity — incidental industry disclosure.
- 40,971 panels drawn in 45 volumes = 910 panels/volume average — Oda’s panel-density stat.
SBS reveals (cross-linked)
- Ryuma = Monsters-canon — high cross-link value to Thriller Bark notes (when created) and to the eventual Wano arc Shusui-return

- Awa Awa no Mi = Paramecia — Devil Fruit type confirmed (note doesn’t exist yet)
- Sabi Sabi no Mi / Captain Shu = Yubashiri-destroyer → Zoro — backfills the Vol 44 Marine-HQ battle perpetrator
- Beri Beri no Mi / Shari Shari no Mi — additional Paramecia fruits named
- Koby — birthday May 13; growth spurt (NOT plastic surgery) confirmed
- Helmeppo — birthday July 16
